Tabadlab’s report “Pak-Americana: Ushering in a New Era of Pakistan-US Relations” argues that the 2020 elections in the US present an opportunity to improve Pakistan-US relations. The report was curated through a consultative process that convened a diverse group of experts to deliberate on the key drivers of the relationship and the way forward. The experts’ group includes former Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir, former Chief of General Staff of the Pakistan Army, Lt Gen Waheed Arshad, University of Lahore academic, Dr Rabia Akhtar, CEO of the Pakistan Business Council, Ehsan Malik, former Board of Investment Chairperson Haroon Sharif and several renowned experts in academia and the private sector.

The report was authored by Mosharraf Zaidi (Tabadlab), Dr. Muhammad Ali (Middle East Institute), and Asad Rafi (Tabadlab), and was developed with the support of the Mahvash and Jahangir Siddiqui Foundation.

Launch Event

The “Pak-Americana: Ushering in a New Era of Pakistan-US Relations” report was launched at an event in Islamabad in February 2021, with speeches by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for National Security, Dr Moeed Yusuf, and Pakistan’s Ambassador at Large for Foreign Investment, and former Ambassador to the United States, Ali Jahangir Siddiqui.

Authors

Mosharraf Zaidi is a public intellectual with over two decades of experience in analysing and shaping policy in complex political environments. He has spearheaded research, analysis and delivery for a wide array of reform interventions in Pakistan and Afghanistan as well as in the South Asia region. His work intersects political economy, strategic communications and change management. He is a Senior Fellow at Tabadlab.

Syed Mohammad Ali has extensive experience working with multilateral, bilateral, government, and non-government organizations on varied international development challenges. His other recent publications include a policy paper on the bilateral U.S.-Pakistan relationship co-sponsored by the Middle East Institute and co-authored with Dr. Marvin Weinbaum. Dr Ali has recently taught at Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and George Washington universities.

Muhammad Asad Rafi is a Research Analyst for Global Affairs and International Security at Tabadlab. He holds a M.A in International Security from Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po. His research interests lie in the fields of regional security, foreign policy and global affairs.
